The Auburn baseball complex speaks of the past while making a statement about the future of Auburn Baseball. The design of Plainsman Park combines the look of old-time ballparks with academic buildings on the Auburn campus to create a facade of brick and painted steel. Inside, the park offers the brick backstop of Chicago’s Wrigley Field, the dark green chair back seats of Baltimore’s Camden Yards, and the Green Monster of Boston’s Fenway Park. Not only is structure reminiscent of past greatness, but the name, Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park, is as well. The Hitchcock brothers, Jimmy and Billy, signify a period of excellence in Auburn Athletics. “Mr. Billy” began a nine-year major league playing career with five teams, after leading Auburn to its first SEC baseball title in 1937, earning the title “The Dignified War Eagle” as manager for the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and the Atlanta Braves. Jimmy, an All-American in both baseball and football, was otherwise known as “The Phantom of Union Springs.”
In April of 2003, Auburn added W. James Samford to the stadium name. The naming honors long-time Auburn trustee, Jimmy Samford, who spearheaded the efforts for the construction of the baseball facility in 1996 and the additional renovations in 2001. Also in 2003, Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park was voted the nation’s top college ballpark by Baseball America.
The 4,096-seat Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park features 3,227 chair back seats, including 1,027 lower level box seats and 2,200 above concourse seats of which 50% are covered by the stadium roof.
